Project Statement

This project is examining the term “production” as a process, a series of steps that are going on in a progressive way that human creates, and refers to a continuing cycle represented by Nature itself. The space that is designed consists of an “edge”, which creates inner-outer relationships between visitors (human – artificial) and the garden (nature). The edge is a multidimensional element that encompasses the space and time that reveals the dynamic interaction between two elements. The project “the Edge” defines the space; examines fluctuation, alteration, and fluidity of the boundary between the human-nature relationship, and symbolizes the endless loop of this relation with the circular form.

Form and structure

The form of the edge is inspired by the “edge effect”, which is a principle of ecological systems. The edges are places of different ecology because they share resources between two separate ecosystems. The highest diversity and productivity are observed in edge conditions in ecological systems. The efficiency of the system can be increased by manipulating the space where the two ecosystems meet and designing this space in its unique type. Also, “edge cultivation” is a permacultural technique that is used for increasing productivity based on the edge effect principle.

User experience

With this green edge, space is turning into a sculptural object with its monumentality that the users be included as an observer beside, becoming an interactive garden that the users are included physically inside of it. The visitor experiences becoming a part of the edge “ itself ”, having an actual entity inner side of “the Edge” and becoming an observer at the outside of “the Edge”.
